Hate Crimes

July 18, 2011

If hating is characteristic of unregenerate man, and it is (Gal 5:20, Tts 3:3);  Is hating sinful?  No, not all hating is a crime.  Scripture says there is a time to hate (Ecc 3:8).  So, let’s beginning with a few absolutes.

Holy, just God loves; but Holy, just God also hates.  Consider a few behaviors God hates:

  1. Deut 12:31  -  murdering children
  2.  Pr 28:16  -  covetousness
  3. Is 1:13-17  -  hypocrisy in worship
  4. Mal 2:14-16  -  divorce

5.  1Pet 5:5  -  pride

6.  Pr 13:5 - Lying

7.  2Jo 9-10  -  sowing discord

8.  Jer 44:4  -  idolatry

Now consider a few behaviors God’s children are told to hate:

1.    1.       Ps 26:5  -  evil doers

2.       Ps 31:6  -  lying vanities

3.       Ps 45:7  -  wickedness

4.       Ps 97:10  -  evil

5.   Ps 119:113  -  vain thoughts

6.   Ps 139:21-22  -  haters of God

7.   Pr 11:15  -  surety

8.   Pr 15:27  -  bribes

Sometimes we don’t hate enough (Rom 7:15), and sometimes we hate for the wrong reasons (Matt 5:43-44).  Hate ought not ever be driven by another’s feelings toward us [toward God, yes; toward us, no].  However, when a person hates sin, he or she is on safe ground (Ps 101:3).

Here’s a safe prayer:  Lord, help me to hate all that you hate, in me.  It’s easy to hate the sin in another, but what about the sin of the guy in the mirror?  Lord, help me to hate all that you hate, in me.
