Three Kinds of Lies

July 11, 2011

Consider three types of lies.  Statements which:

bullet

1.       deceive another.  To a teacher - the dog ate my homework; a parent - I didn’t do anything; to Eve - thou shalt not surely die (Gen 3:4).

bullet

2.       deceive self.  The alcoholic:  I’ve got it under control; the procrastinator - I’ll do it tomorrow; Peter – I’ll not deny Thee (Mark 14:3).

bullet

3.       contradict God.   The evolutionist:  man evolved from pond scum.  A non-Christian:  Jesus was just a good man.  Mary Magdalene:  someone stole Jesus’ body (John 20:2).

Deception is not imperative in determining whether or not a statement is a lie.  An addict may be very sincere when he says, Never again – but he lies.  You know it, police know it, and doctors know it; but the addict doesn’t know it.  Yet, “infidels” are not the only ones who deceive themselves.  That’s right, God said the saint who says:

bullet

1Jo 1:6  -  God and I are close, but walks in darkness; lies

bullet

1Jo 2:4  -  I know God, but ignores His commandments; lies

bullet

·       1Jo 4:20  -  I love God, but hates his brother; lies

For what if some did not believe? shall their unbelief make the faith of God without effect?  God forbid: yea, let God be true, but every man a liar; as it is written, That thou mightest be justified in thy sayings, and mightest overcome when thou art judged (Rom 3:3-4).  God is our standard, not feelings nor good intensions.
