Declaration of Dependence
July 4, 2011
Have you ever taken
a good look at America’s Declaration of Independence?
The document names God four times, the same number as the British Crown
is named. America was not rebelling
against all authority; she simply desired to remove England, the layer of
authority between God and herself.
The document might have been named a Declaration of Dependence.
The same could have
been said of Moses when he petitioned Pharaoh.
Let My people go, that they may
serve Me (Ex 8:1). Israel was
not rebelling against all authority; Israel simply desired to remove Egypt, the
layer of authority between God and herself.
Was America seeking
independence, or were they seeking to serve God better?
Our
pledge (one nation under God),
anthem (God shed His grace on thee),
currency (in God we trust), and
oath (so help me God)
indicate submission to God, as do the words of our nation’s early
presidents:
-
Washington
(1st president).
Do not let anyone claim the tribute of American patriotism if they
ever attempt to remove religion from politics.
-
Jefferson
(3rd). The First
Amendment has erected a wall of separation between church and state, but
that wall is a one directional wall; it keeps the government from running
the church, but it makes sure that Christian principles will always stay in
government.
-
Madison
(4th).
We have staked the future of all of our political institutions
upon the capacity of each and all of us to govern ourselves according to the
Ten Commandments of God.
-
Adams
(6th).
The highest glory of the American Revolution was this: that it
connected, in one indissoluble bond, the principles of civil government with
the principles of Christianity.
-
Henry
(7th).
It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great
nation was founded, not by religionists, but by Christians, not on
religions, but on the gospel of Jesus Christ!
Modern
America
is doing the opposite of her forefathers; she is seeking to replace God and add
new layers of authority (i.e., NATO and the United Nations).
But that shouldn’t surprise us; backsliding Israel desired similar layers
(Ex 32:1, 35; 1Sa 8:6-7). It didn’t
work for Israel; so why should it work for us?
