The Prophet Samuel

June 17, 2011

And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gideon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthah; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets:  Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions, quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, waxed valiant in fight, turned to flight the armies of the aliens (Heb 11:32-34).

When I read a passage such as the one above, I often consider the men named.  Five of the six men were soldiers, but not Samuel.  What about Samuel caused God to include him in the list above?  He did not slay a lion or a giant, but the Book of 1st Samuel says he:

bullet

1.       ministered unto the Lord as a child (2:11, 18)

bullet

2.       grew in favor with God and man (2:26)

bullet

3.       did not allow God’s word to fall to the ground (3:19)

bullet

4.       prayed fervently and effectively (7:5)

bullet

5.       judged righteously (7:15)

bullet

6.       administered his office faithfully (12:5)

bullet

7.       preached truth plainly (12:13-15)

bullet

8.       corrected sin in high places (13:13, 15:14)

bullet

9.       comforted the innocent (19:18)

Not all members of the Baseball Hall of Fame were home run hitters.  Several high average, singles hitters were inducted as well.  As I read Samuel’s resume, I believe we can perform many of Samuel’s behaviors, with God’s help.
