Slow to Speak

Be slow to speak (Jam 1:19).  What’s the downside of speaking too quickly?

 1.       Speaking too quickly demonstrates a lack of self discipline

·         Pr 10:19  -  he that refraineth his lips is wise

bullet

·         Pr 13:3  -  he that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life

bullet

·         Pr 21:23  -  whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles

bullet

·         Ecc 10:14  -  a fool also is full of words … who can tell him?

2.  2.     Lips, tongue, and mouths are to be controlled

bullet

·         Jam 1:26  -  bridleth not his tongue, deceiveth his own heart

bullet

·         Jam 3:2  -  offend not in word is perfect and able also to bridle the whole body

bullet

·         Jam 3:6  -  the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity

bullet

·         1Pe 3:10  -  refrain his tongue from evil and lips that speak no guile

3.   3.     Hasty and excess words commit us to things we regret

·         Pr 17:27  -  he that hath knowledge spareth his words

bullet

·         Ecc 5:2  -  let not thine heart be hasty to utter anything before God

bullet

·         Num 30:2  -  If a man vow or swear an oath, ought not break his word

bullet

·         Jdg 11:30  -  Jephthah’s quick vow caused him much sorrow

4.  4.      Do not forget N.T. lists several spoken sins

·         Rom 1:28-32  -  debate, whisperers, backbiters, covenant breakers

bullet

·         2Ti 3:1-5  -  boasters, truce breakers, false accusers, heady, highminded

bullet

·         1Co 5:11, 6:10; Gal 5:19-21  -  revilers, railers, variance, strife, heresies, seditions

bullet

·         Eph 5:4  -  neither filthiness, foolish talking, or jesting
