Fly Straight

May 27, 2011

As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.  Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate (Ps 127:4-5).

I used to think having lots of children would make a person happy.  That’s what I used to think this passage said, but not anymore.  I have counseled too many unhappy parents.

·         Pr 10:1  -  … a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother

·         Pr 17:21  -  He that begetteth a fool doeth it to his sorrow

·         Pr 17:25  -  A foolish son is a grief to his father, and bitterness to her that bare him

·         Pr 19:13  -  A foolish son is the calamity of his father

What is the them in verse 5, arrows or a mighty man’s arrows?  A mighty man was the elite among soldiers.  Not just an Army Ranger, but the elite among Rangers.  Not just a Navy Seal, but the elite among Seals.  Think of a master archer with an unbalanced or a warped arrow.  Can you picture the arrow curving to the side or diving to the ground before hitting its mark?  There is no happiness in a quiver full of warped or unbalanced arrows, but a quiver full of finely crafted arrows bring joy.

A mighty man searched the forest for good wood.  He then cured and sanded his shaft.  A mighty man forged his tips.  He designed, honed, attached, and balanced each tip on its shaft.  A mighty man also feathered his arrows.  He attached and trimmed feathers for stability.  Finally came the time when a mighty man aimed his arrow and let it go.

And that’s what parents do.  They spend years crafting their arrows.  But will an arrow fly straight after it is let go?  Will it hit the mark?  Happy is the man whose arrows fly straight.  Happy is the man with a quiver full of arrows which hit the mark.  Lord, give me a quiver full of a mighty man’s arrows.
