Parents in Proverbs

March 24, 2011

The Book of Proverbs has much to say about wisdom and the source of wisdom.  True wisdom comes from God (3:5-7), yet God said there would be those who would reject His wisdom (1:5-7).  Maybe, they refuse because God chose to pass much of His wisdom to children through parents (1:8, 6:20).

We ought not to be surprised when children refuse wisdom from parents (20:20, 30:11-12).  Nevertheless, the path rebellious children travel is and will be hard (28:24, 30:17).  Sadly, this is the case for too many American children (19:26, 23:33).

Parents have no greater joy than to see their children walk in wisdom (10:1, 15:20, 23:25).  We counsel children not with “because I said so,” but with “because I did so and it doesn’t work.”  Parents try to increase a child’s happiness, not rob them of it (1:22-29).  Parents try to save their children, not destroy them (2:11-12).

Children who refuse to learn from their parents are cursed to repeat their parents’ mistakes (4:1-3).  But in the end, some children are bound and determined to reinvent the wheel.
