Faithful Men

 March 10, 2011

Wise men surround themselves with faithful people.  Confidence in unfaithful men in time of trouble is like a broken tooth, and a foot out of joint (Pr 25:19).  What kind of men should we surround ourselves with?  What qualities do faithful men possess?  The Book of Proverbs lists five qualities of faithful men.  Faithful men speak:

  1.  Discretely.  Pro 11:13  -  A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.  A faithful man is not a talebearer.

  2. Humbly.  Pr 20:6  -  Most men proclaim their own goodness: but a faithful man who can find?  A faithful man is not a braggart.

  3. Truthfully.  Pr 14:5  -  A faithful witness will not lie: but a false witness will utter lies.  A faithful man speaks truth.

  4. Encouragement.  Pr 25:13  -  As the cold in the time of harvest, so is a faithful messenger.  A faithful man bears burdens, he doesn’t add to them.

  5. Hard words when needed.  Pr 27:6  -  Faithful are the wounds of a friend; but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.  Faithful friends know how to admonish.

Was Jonathan a faithful man?  Read 1Sa 20:27-34, then answer.  Most would agree Jonathan was a faithful friend.  He was discrete, humble, truthful, and encouraging to David.  But was Jonathan a faithful son?  Saul thought no.  But what do you say?

Jonathan was a faithful son.  Jonathan tried to show Saul his sin.  Sure, Jonathan confronted Saul, but he did so with discretion and in truth.  Faithful men do not always agree with us, but we need to surround ourselves with them nonetheless.
