Stewards of God’s Word

February 3, 2011

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust (1Ti 6:20).  What had Paul committed to Timothy?  What had Paul entrusted his son in the ministry?  Paul told Timothy to be a good steward of God’s word.

In a secular sense, what differentiates a good steward from a bad steward?   A good steward:  1) conscientiously preserves and protects that which he is entrusted,  2) diligently nourishes and develops that which he is entrusted, and  3) executes all of his duties with integrity.  Whereas, a bad steward does none of these things.  Paul gave Timothy similar commands concerning God’s word.  He said:

bullet 1Ti 1:3-7  -  teach scripture and nothing else
bullet 1Ti 1:18-20  -  do not blaspheme scripture
bullet 1Ti 2:7  -  do not alter scripture
bullet 1Ti 4:1-3  -  do not leave or abandon scripture
bullet 1Ti 4:6-7  -  recall scripture
bullet 1Ti 4:12-16  -  diligently  read and obey scripture
bullet 1Ti 6:3-5  -  withdraw from those who teach otherwise
bullet 1Ti 6:12-14  -  fight for and protect scripture
bullet 1Ti 6:20-21  -  follow only scripture

Like a secular steward, Paul told Timothy to be diligent, conscientious, and exercise integrity with regard to God’s word.  May we be good stewards of God’s word.
